Era facilmente immaginabile che l'invasione di giochi come Doom e tutti i suoi successivi cloni, fornisse un nuovo "mondo" ludico nel quale sfogarsi e che i cari vecchi platform venissero, se non proprio abbandonati, almeno ridotti ad un ruolo secondario. La nuova visuale in soggettiva e la libertà di movimento hanno infatti offerto la possibilità di un coinvolgimento maggiore, rispetto alla vecchia visuale esterna e laterale, quasi sempre solo in 2D.
