There is a little bit of the high ends of the sound muted for the first few minutes, then the encoder fixes the balance and the sound is as good as it's going to get for the rest of the movie. There are a couple of places that the sound pops and glitches, but am certain it is not the fault of the encoder. The fault lies solely with the age of the movie and the copy that the tv broadcast this was recorded from didn't fix them before airing.
Video is not as crisp as it could be, is formatted for old style square televisions so is not letterboxed in the original 75mm format. This is about the quality of old VHS tapes so is very watchable and still very enjoyable.
Since there is no other copy available at this time for this movie in original letterbox or otherwise, this one will do fine for those that love old hollywood golden age musicals.
This is the movie that Fred Astaire dances on the walls and ceiling, and the camera and stage rigs used was invented for this sequence. It is the same technology that was used for the tumbling fighting action sequences in "Inception"
