Saartjie werd tentoongesteld in Londen omdat blanke Europeanen haar lichaamsbouw wilden zien. Ze was namelijk erg klein, had een zwarte huidskleur, een groot achterwerk, lange schaamlippen en dikke lippen, zoals vooral bij de Khoi wel meer voorkwam. Saartjie Baartman reisde later af naar Parijs en stierf uiteindelijk op 29 december 1815 aan een infectieziekte.
