Funny, I thought the Depp one was okay. Granted, it was Tim Burton's remake, but it followed the book a LOT more closely than the original movie.
Unfortunately, though, you just can't beat the original. It's a classic.

Dahl's family actually hates this version, as much as there is a huge fan-base for it. Tim Burton's film was much closer to his vision of the book, since it was called "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".

who cares if dahls family hates this version, of whether this one is less like the book. guess what dahl wrote this one too- he made the screenplay, he had the creative decision to change the story anyway he wanted too and its brilliant, especially when compared to tim burton's bs!

Actually David Seltzer completed Dahl's screenplay for this, and if it irked Dahl to no end for his deviations from the book, he likely rolled over in his grave given Burton's remake, a "regurgitation" of the same basic material,
but dumbed down in many ways for political correctness. Wilder's Willy is absolutely timeless!
