Islam doesn't teach you to do anything. The Qur'an and the hadiths are what muslims base their religious beliefs on. A book and stories about a man. Among the hadiths and in the suras are verses which can be interpreted as to reward violent suppression of non-muslims. In the same book and stories are verses which can be interpreted so that violence against non-muslims is punishable.
Islam is a vague and ever chancing concept that is different for each and ever man woman and child who believes in it. Whats haram for one isn't always haram for another.
