'Authority' paranoia over photography in London An interesting short film about the legality of taking photographs on the streets in the UK. There's a nice interaction between the photographer and a couple of Police Community Support Officers in Central London. For those who are unfimilar with CSO's, these are not Police Officers, though they are uniformed personnel working with the police in England and Wales. Their function it seems is: '...to provide a visible and reassuring presence on the streets and tackling the menace of anti-social behaviour.' You can draw your own conclusions on that! NB The bit about having to ask for permission before taking photographs in Railway Stations is somewhat misleading as you don't have to have prior permission - not at the moment anyway Please leave a comment if you want, this is just to show what is out there... I have been through a similar discussion with an attendant at Waterloo station. He politely asked me to 'register' to allow me to take pictures...
Honestly, anyone with knowledge of covert video could stake out any building or monument without taking any pictures, rendering this hysteria completely moot.
As the document poses; these uniformed tugs are there just for show, the lull the public (read sheep) and the tourists into a false sense of security.
In another subway system in France (not Paris) an attendant asked me to delete the pictures I had taken of an empty subway car (because it looked cool and modern), and even proudly declared that he 'knew' about digital cameras and could help me delete the pictures!... I deleted them but was very tempted to remark that apparently he wasn't aware that you could 'undelete' files from memory cards... Idiot.
