I'm going to try this again from scratch and see if I can enable the subtitles this time.

when dealing with subtitles always check to see if the names of the files are the same.
To get the subtitles to work you have to rename the files as exactly the same...
copy the name of the AVI file and then paste it into the name of the SRT file.
then if you burn the two files onto a disc the subtitles will show up on your external player...they will also now play automatically in VLC player.
spread the instructions for other people who are new to using torrent subtitles.
