Description:

Koko - A Talking Gorilla 1978 XviD MP3.avi This is the wonderfully heart warming story of Koko, a lowland gorilla, trained in sign language and so able to express her emotions, fears and dreams to her keeper Penny Patterson. It demonstrates the incredible intelligence of these wonderful animals that sadly are still killed and eaten as bushmeat when in truth they share 99% of our own DNA and are so close to us in intelligence and behaviour that many people think they deserve human rights. The next part of her story is A Conversation with Koko - 1999, bringing the story 20 years further up to date. I'll be sharing that too shortly. PLease help me share by keeping and seeding as my upload bandwidth is very low. If you enjoyed this please leave a comment for me. Dave

Apologies for the delay in uploading this. AOL is blocking all my p2p connections as it does every day between certain times. Bastards.
Normal service will be resumed shortly I hope :)
I constantly monitor all my uploads to make sure they are seeding properly and if necessary to reseed finished ones when everyone who has got the file has deleted it and is no longer sharing. Have confidence that you will get all of this in due course.
Please help me to share by keeping and seeding this as my upload bandwidth is only 288 kbps. About 75 mb per hour. It takes me 5 or more hours to share a 350 mb tv prog and twice that for a 700 mb movie.
We get there in the end though.

Thanks for this. It deserves a comment or two.
Penny Patterson and I shared a thesis advisor, though it was years apart. But I did read the original of her manuscript. Evidence of language development in humans is taken as "production", or producing new words, usually from components of old words. The result is often a "compound" word. Koko produced at least one such, by combining the sign for "apple" and the sign for "drink", creating "apple juice".
Consider also the words people tend to learn from another language even if they don't learn most of it. Also consider what kids take great pleasure in learning and repeating. "Dirty" words are ubiquitous and get a great deal of informal attention. Given as recounted details but not hypothesized as such, Koko responded to Penny's attempts to get her interested in Mike (her intended mate) by saying "I like Mike. Mike is a smart gorilla," with the signs "Mike dirty toilet stink", her words for "shit".
I'm waiting for the 1999 film to find out if they mention Koko's being given and specially designed, symbol based keyboard and connected to (the pre-internet version of) America On Line. If it is, what's probably not covered is the fact that Koko spent about 5 of her scheduled 30 minutes watching the monitor. Then she got disgusted and walked away. Koko is a smart gorilla.

Thanks for that Dynasoar. AFAIK Koko has invented many compound words over the years. Her word for ring is 'finger bracelet' and I'm sure others are mentioned in the films.
Just to say how I first learned about her. It was in 1978, I was 18 and popped into the local library to return some books. On the magazine table as I walked by was an edition of National Geographic with a photo of a gorilla holding a camera. Intrigued I picked it up and read the article. The photo was actually a self portrait of Koko taking her own picture in a mirror.
The article changed my life. It transformed my view of animals, their intelligence and their ability to communicate with us. It made it crystal clear they feel many of the the same emotions we do and at least in the case of the higher primates the differences between us are not that great.
I've followed her story for the 30 years since that day with undiminished fascination. I hope these movies change other people's views as well.

I've just listed the second film. Hope everyone enjoys it.
