Description:

The Magic of Reality Richard Dawkins 6 CDs - Unabridged Read by Richard Dawkins and Lalla Ward Magic takes many forms. Supernatural magic is what our ancestors used in order to explain the world before they developed the scientific method. The ancient Egyptians explained the night by suggesting the goddess Nut swallowed the sun. The Vikings believed a rainbow was the gods’ bridge to earth. The Japanese used to explain earthquakes by conjuring a gigantic catfish that carried the world on its back—earthquakes occurred each time it flipped its tail. These are magical, extraordinary tales. But there is another kind of magic, and it lies in the exhilaration of discovering the real answers to these questions. It is the magic of reality—science. Packed with clever thought experiments, dazzling illustrations and jaw-dropping facts, The Magic of Reality explains a stunningly wide range of natural phenomena. What is stuff made of? How old is the universe? Why do the continents look like disconnected pieces of a puzzle? What causes tsunamis? Why are there so many kinds of plants and animals? Who was the first man, or woman? This is a page-turning, graphic detective story that not only mines all the sciences for its clues but primes the reader to think like a scientist as well. Richard Dawkins, the world’s most famous evolutionary biologist and one of science education’s most passionate advocates, has spent his career elucidating the wonders of science for adult readers. But now, in a dramatic departure, he has teamed up with acclaimed artist Dave McKean and used his unrivaled explanatory powers to share the magic of science with readers of all ages. This is a treasure trove for anyone who has ever wondered how the world works. Dawkins and McKean have created an illustrated guide to the secrets of our world—and the universe beyond—that will entertain and inform for years to come. Enjoy and Seed!!

Thank you very much.

Files: no problem, what can go wrong with six mp3s?
But be aware that these files have NOT been tagged with iTunes/media data yet, so there's no attribution for artist (author), album, etc. As a result, the files are only identified as "Part 1, Part 2, Part 3", etc. In a iPod/smartphone, they don't show up in your queue unless you look for files by song title (don't look for "Richard Dawkins" or even "unknown artist"--they're not there), and then scroll to "P" to find them. So I'd suggest personalizing the files with tags when you add to your mp3 player in iTunes (or whatever), and THEN playing them. I wish the seeder has opted to so this, but it's not a big deal.

Magic? Hardly.
If you've got a grade 10 education, nothing in this audiobook should be new to you. It had me fast-forwarding through most of it because there was hardly anything to learn from it. Ironically, the non-science in the book, that is the creation stories and myths, were the most interesting parts.
Take note that this is "...a science book aimed primarily at children and young adults".

commentor837, you know this is a book for children, right? dawkins said this book is for twelve year olds and older.
but the way dawkins explains things is far superior to the ways i was taught them in school. this should supplement every student's science book.

excellent. thanks.

commentor837, most religious people need to be tought reality as you would teach it to a child. They have had their hands held all through life. They cant just depart straight into the truth with out a gradual and easy introduction. This book is perfect for both kids and those who were religious and have just recently converted away. Its a way to understand what things really are, and how to understand what is wrong with the way religion and myths try to explain.
