"AS TIME GOES BY" - 280 versions of this magic song ! Info: You know, it seems obvious that I must madly love this song, when I'm posting this. Truth is, I don't say/think that this is the greatest song of history, I enjoy every kind of music from "popish" to the "weirdo" styles. But this is the only song which haunted me SO, that I had to do this unique collection. Dunno if you've seen Casablanca or not, it's quite certain that favour of this classic movie has a lot to do with the favour of this song, the only thing I can say is that I find rare and special magic in the lyrics and music of this song by Herman Hupfeld. So, you can listen to the very different interpretations, covers and arrangements. Of course, there is an original film song (by Dooley Wilson) and there are a lot of most popular versions, e.g. by Frank Sinatra, Bryan Ferry, Billie Holiday, Tony Bennett or Peggy Lee. But I'd like to recommend especially a few very interesting recordings made BEFORE Casablanca release, because the song was written in 1931, so it had some history earlier than Ingrid said those words... ;-) So, check the recordings from 30's and 40's (Binnie Hale, Rudy Vallee, Columbians etc.). Also, there is some really unique and hard to find stuff (like L. Cohen live version, Marie Fredriksson, Frank singing live for next to him sitting Ingrid Bergman, Ingrid herself humming this melody, Carreras' exquisite take, Nancy Sinatra's version, Frankie Lymon, Carmen McRae live etc.). A lot of nice jazz versions (Baker, Garner, Bill Evans...), some bossa novas, some weirdos like ZZ Top, John Lennon shot, B.White, R.Leinoff, Vangelis A.Urziceanu or Nek, some beautiful choir versions (Greater Vancouver G., Snärkekören möter), a lot of live versions (Minnelli, Iglesias, Birkin, Stewart, Ella F.(!), Streisand etc), some unexpected (Petula Clark, J. Love Hewitt) or really crazy (Spike Jones, Hamilton H.S.J.Band A, Gloria Gaynor) and fun numbers (Fats Domino, Tommy Mattiniero). Some of singers I've never even heard of before but they're great (Gracie Fields, Lee Wiley, Richie Cole, Real Group), some versions are simply great and breathtaking (Louis Prima, Julie London, Anita O'Day, Mísia, Ferrer and Portuondo), some sweet and enjoyable (Cascading Voices..., Mariachi Vargas, Sören Rydgren, Burl Ives, Ana Caram). But I must admit, because I wanted to make this collection as complete as possible, there is also some of shallow, superficial, dull and clearly commercial versions... Well, you can delete what you want :-) From the whole scale of different versions I specially enjoy some trax from "amateurs", some takes from youtube (marked!) and the versions recorded live and not in great quality in various bars, restaurants, cruise ships and clubs. For me, this is the part of magic of this song, the life of song among ordinary musicians, fans and enthusiastic people (Jane Young, Lino Patruno, David and Camy homemade version, Lara Thompson, simple and moving "amorim1"). In sum, most of these are piano versions, but you can also listen to bigbands, choirs, violins, violin quartet, panpipes, harp, cimbal, accordeon, trumpet, sax, guitars, accordeon, harmonicas, tuba, ukulele etc. ;-) Only trouble with such kind of collections is different volume level of various recordings. Well, you can use some player that has an option to "normalize" volume level. (e.g. JetAudio/Preferences/File/AGC/Enable AGC to normalize volume while playing) Last but not least, if you'll find any fakes, mistakes (years of recordings), duplicities or especially some version that I'm missing, PLEASE LET ME KNOW ABOUT IT!
