Description:
Mac OS 9.0.4
International English, retail version
What is this?
This is the ISO image of a bootable Mac OS 9.0.4 CD.
The ISO is packed to lessen the time needed for downloading it.
Before you can do anything with it you need to unpack it.
When unpacked, the ISO file is 699MB. There's no password.
If you don't have any RAR upacker, you'll have to download
one from somewhere.
Below are suggestions for using some free or semi-free
(trial) sofware for unpacking RAR archives:
RAR applications under Windows:
Zipeg
UltimateZip
StuffIt Expander (free)
StuffIt Deluxe (30 days trial)
StuffIt Standard (30 days trial)
WinRAR (40 days evaluation)
RAR applications under Mac OS X:
UnRarX
RAR Expander
SimplyRAR
The Unarchiver
StuffIt Expander (free)
StuffIt Deluxe (30 days trial)
StuffIt Standard (30 days trial)
RAR for Mac OS X (40 days trial)
RAR applications under Mac OS Classic:
MacUnRAR
StuffIt Expander
What's it for?
The Mac OS 9.0.4 ISO file is the "mold" for creating one or
several instances of physical Mac OS 9.0.4 CDs. The physical
CD can be used for booting up and installing the OS to many
older Macintosh computer models. Use your favourite burning
application or download one from the Internet. Please note
that you CANNOT use a rewritable CD for this if you want it
to boot on most older Macintoshes! You do not need to burn
the ISO image on a Mac. The ISO standard describes a CD bit
by bit and the burning system doesn't need to "understand"
what's on the CD. Like a photocopier.
Here below are some suggestions for free software to burn
ISO images on different platforms. Additionally, on Mac OS
X and other Unix type OSes (Solaris, Irix, Linux, BSD, etc)
there's normally some nifty command line solution that will
do the trick, but you'll have to find out for yourself what
that might be on each particular platform.
Burning applications for Windows:
ImgBurn
ISO Recorder
BurnCDCC
InfraRecorder
DeepBurner
Ultimate CD/DVD Burner
Burn At Once
Burn Aware
Burning applications for Mac OS X:
Mac OS X Disk Utility (included in the OS)
Burn
Discribe 5.1.7 (demo version gives you 5 free burns)
Disco (7 disk free burns)
Burning applications for Mac OS 8.6 - 9.x.x:
Discribe 5.1.7 (demo version gives you 5 free burns)
Same demo download as for Mac OS X.
Why?
Why not? Old operating systems can be (sort of) fun.
And you need them to fire up old hardware.
How do I use the CD?
On a Macintosh you boot from CD by holding down the "C" key
on the keyboard. The Mac OS CD of course must be in the drive.
The Mac will also boot from the CD if there's no system on
the hard disk. All Mac OS CDs are "live" CDs. A limited
live system booted from the CD will allow you to format a hard
drive and install a "real", complete OS from it onto the hard
drive.
Is it for my Macintosh model?
Go to Apple's URL and search for article number 25114.
It will present you with a table of Macintosh models and what
versions of Mac OS support them. This software can't be used
on Intel Macs or on PCs.
What else?
An OS isn't much fun by itself. The empty space of the original
CD has been filled with an assortment of system upgrades
and other software. The extra material is all placed into one
directory named XTRAS, as to isolate it from the original contents
of the CD. The files are further sorted by type into
separate folders. System updates are all in the System Updates
folder, etc. Programs that need serials or cracks have them in
separate text files in the same folder where the program resides.
Here's a list of the extra material:
Acrobat Reader 5.05
CD Everywhere 2.0
Toast 5.0.1
Netscape 7.02
Flash Player 7.0r69
Macromedia Shockwave 10.1.1.016
Transmit 1.7 FTP
NetPresenz 4.1
USB Overdrive 1.4
iTunes 2.0.4
Music Vac
QuickTime 6.0.3
RealPlayer 8
SoundApp 2.7.3
AppleWorks 5.0.3
StuffIt 7.0.3
A-Dock 3.0.1
DragThing 4.6.1
Kaleidoscope 2.3.1
Aquamakeover (Jaguar theme for Kaleidoscope)
Joliet Volume Access 2.0.3
Marine Aquarium 1.1
SwitchRes 2.5.3
AirPort 2.0.2
CarbonLib 1.6
ColorSync 3.0.3
Disk First Aid 8.6.1
Java 2.2.6
Multiple Users 1.4.1
OpenGL 1.2.1
URL Access 2.3
USB Card Support 1.4.1
Graphic Converter 5.9.5
PCalc 2.2.2
VueScan 7.6.64
The versions of the system upgrades are the latest supported
on Mac OS 9.0.4. Most application programs will require that
CarbonLib 1.6 is installed beforehand. You can install everything
on the disk, but you should start with CarbonLib and the system
upgrades. Updating QuckTime is essential.
Some of these files, like the Aquamakeover Jaguar theme, can't
be found on the Internet anymore.
If you don't know what a program is about, google for it.
What's the use?
Older systems can still be useful for productive work. This ISO
contains pretty much everything a small home office could ask for.
It is a tribute to all dumpster divers and hardware hamsters out there.
To people who can't let go.
How long will it be seeded?
A very short time.
You guys will have to keep up the seed or reseed it at some other
date.
What then?
Check out my "Mac OS 9 Companion Disk" torrent. It is a continuation
of this disk, featuring Mac OS upgrades up to 9.2.2, more office
software, Photoshop 6 and more.
How can you help?
Please get in touch with me if you can help providing me with Mac OS
Classic software. My wishlist is as follows:
Mac OS 9.1, retail, North American English
Mac OS 9.2.1, retail, North American English
Retail means the disk isn't specific to any particular Macintosh model.
The original disk has a yellow-orange-brownish number 9 on white
background.
Office 2001, any Englih version and also the Swedish language version.
Anything Adobe, except for Photoshop 6.
Music software.
In fact, pretty much everything is interesting, except for what you see
listed above and in my other torrents.
If you're having problems downloading this torrent or any other torrent
of mine, get in touch with me and we'll try other solutions, like
Rapidshare etc.

My seeding this stops at 21.00 (9pm) today. There are some 20 other seeders at the moment so that shouldn't be a problem.

Can you only use this on a Mac computer?Popocapetl (2008-03-27)
What do you mean by fake? This software collection only works on older PPC Macintoshes, as mentioned in the description.

WILL NOT BOOT!Popocapetl (2008-04-19)
@zeppelin88Have you checked that your Macintosh model will boot the 9.0.4 OS? Anyone else having booting problems?
snoopfroggyfrog (2008-05-22)
It is also not booting on my PMac G4 MDD Dual 1,25 GHZ. Burned the iso with toast 8 in tiger. No booting at all, not even a floppy with blinking question mark. Will try to burn it on panther with toast 6. had no luck with all the available 9.x here on tpb. but my machine is capable booting os9, very sure!
Popocapetl (2008-05-24)
@snoopfroggyfroggYour machine can NOT boot from Mac OS 9.0.4!
The MDD can only boot from a special Mac OS 9.2.2, tailored for the specific hardware of the MDD. It won't make a difference if you burn the ISO under Panther.

Not working.. When will someone make a correct image of a CD and stop dragging and dropping...chadeboy (2008-09-05)

By writing a descriptive FAQ I thought the use of this ISO would be idiot-proof. Either some of the commenters here haven't read the description or assume way too much. The ISO file is not extractable. You can't mount it and then browse or use the contents in any sensible way. You MUST burn it to a real CD!
Trust me, this ISO works, provided you do with it what it is supposed to be used for.
Let's try it again.
1. Read the description. Yes, relax and just read it, you don't need to take notes.
2. Go to Apple's site and find out if your machine is supported. If not, stop right here.
3. Download the torrent, un-RAR it and burn the ISO. Do not virtualize the ISO, mount the ISO, extract the ISO. Just god damn burn it.
4. Put the burned CD into your Macintosh, restart and then immediately press and hold the "C" key on the keyboard.
5. When you see a smiling Mac in the middle of the screen, release the "C" key.
6. The system on the CD will take you to a desktop with a yellowish background sporting a repetetive pattern containing the letters CD.
7. If there's a previous system on the hard drive, all of its icons will be presented on the desktop as well. You can now first format your drive and after that install Mac OS 9.0.4. This system is old and won't urge you to do things you should have done prior to what you try to do.
8. After successful installation you can incrementally upgrade your system to the highest possible version of Mac OS 9. First install Mac OS 9.1, then 9.2.1 and finally 9.2.2. Again, see point 2. The upgrade files are on the sister torrent to this one. They can also be downloaded from Apple.
There has been people writing to my email address and thanking me for the torrent. They also claimed the thing worked for them. Could some of you guys please come back here and share your impressions with the rest of the crowd?

Can someone seed the USA/Powermac G4 9.0.4 CD?freqazoidiac (2008-09-20)
thanks for this nice package. Runs beautifully on my Powerbook PISMO g3-400. The included apps are a grace and much appreciated, as some of these xtra files are impossible to find now. thanks for your time to compile.TontoYoder (2008-09-21)
Thanks for this. I'm in the middle of installing, but everything seems OK--all icons/folders are visible on the desktop and looks like installation (to a slave drive) will be a breeze.Unpacked with Stuffit and burned with Disk Utility.
Hope this gets a glitchy iMac G3 up and running.
Thanks again.

Anyone know how to install OS 9 via netboot?maini4ka (2008-11-11)
Thank you so much Popocapetl for the upload, and above all, for the wonderful description you've done. I want to resurrect my Pismo for my 9-y.o. with this.I have tons of OS9 software on MO disks, will see whether I have what you need.

Just a question: is there a version of Skype that would run on OS9? Thanks for sharing.Zankarst (2008-11-14)
This ISO has a lot of errors within the disk. Not worth the download as it doesn't work properly, even if you burn it.Zankarst (2008-11-15)
I take back my previous comment. It works as stated.Popocapetl (2008-11-15)
This is from Skype's forum:"No version of Skype is available for Mac OS 9 systems, and never will be."
wildsidecreations (2008-11-19)
QUOTE: "Do not virtualize the ISO, mount the ISO, extract the ISO. Just god damn burn it."LMAO! Thank you. I don't know how many times I have tried to explain to someone what to do and they just think they know better.

it is a real CD. But I can't boot my 'snow white' ibook from it. OSX says it is an install cd, but I have not tried to install it from within OSX.jc4jv (2008-12-18)
Hi, having a bit of troublei get in and everything but during install i get:
The Installer document "Install System Software" is damaged. Make sure you are using the original Installer disks and try again.
please help i have a PM 6200
jc4jv (2008-12-18)
It's OK I fixed it (I don't know how though)!Popocapetl (2008-12-28)
@mikeyjap and @summerHereKids
It may be so that you first need to update your firmware.
You must do that from a Mac OS 8.6 system installed on the
hard drive. Click my name, Popocapetl, and you'll find such
a system here on Pirate Bay, Mac OS 8.6 US English.
@jc4jv
The PM 6200 is as old as Metusalem. Those old CDROM drives
are really tired and maybe not capable of reading the new
CDs. There are two possible approaches to solving this.
One is to burn the OS onto another brand of CD, and if that
fails yet another and so on.
The other way is to temporarily borrow a newer CDROM drive
from your PC and see if that helps. This is a bit more
cumbersome since you'll be having to open up your Mac.
Rubiksfaq (2008-12-30)
I just picked up an old AIO Power Mac G3, and I wanted to upgrade the OS and stuff on it.Btw - I've always been a PC guy before this, so I have no idea what to do on a Mac system.
So I guess my question is: Would this OS work for it, and are there drivers you need to download?
This looks like an awesome torrent, so thanks for uploading; I'm downloading it right now.

Oh, BTW:For the Article Number 25114 mentioned in the description, Apple renamed the article to HT1835.
Here's the link directly to the article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1835
Popocapetl (2009-01-01)
@ RubiksfaqThanks for posting that link to the table of what operating systems fit what Apple models. But you should also have looked at it yourself. The All-In-One is in there. That's one of only two machines which is supported by all Mac OS versions, from 8.0 to 9.2.2.
You will not normally need any extra drivers provided that your Mac is a standard one. Everything extra you put into the PCI slots, printers, scanners etc will probably need drivers.
There are two sort-of-drivers included into the compilation. The USB Overdrive 1.4 is a generic driver for various mice, trackballs, joysticks etc. It will provide functions for both scroll wheels and all those extra buttons on modern USB mice.
If you don't have built in USB on your machine, try finding an older USB1.1 PCI card with two USB ports and an Opti chip on it. Most PC owners don't want them anyway, but they're the one's that work on the older Macs.
The other sort-of-driver is Vuescan. It supports lots and lots of scanners. However, not the Packard Bell I own. Which in reality is a Mustek rebadged to Packard Bell. Lucky for me Mustek has Mac OS 9 drivers for my scanner.
lodiwijk (2009-05-08)
Perfect! Never thought that downloading torrents could be so fast (760 k/s)!Thanks, I did need this for a sonnet processor upgrade software, which was only compatible with mac os 9.
Thanks again!
Popocapetl (2009-06-21)
Guys, if your PRAM (comparable to RTC battery on a PC) is dead, your machine will become extremely quirky and odd. If your Mac is an old one, which is quite likely in this case, your PRAM battery may be dead. That may explain some of the troubles with installing the Clasic OS.GamesoulMaster (2009-06-28)
Thank you very much for this and the companion disc. It's very difficult to find a copy of Mac OS 9 that isn't made for one particular computer. And especially all the software you included. To everybody having problems, the problem is with you, not this release. Maybe your computer isn't compatible. Maybe you're missing a vital step. Whatever it is, it's not this release. This is my first time working with Mac hardware/software (friend gave me a Powerbook G3 Series laptop), and the info provided here (in addition to some common sense) was more than enough to get things running properly.

Thanks for uploading & seeding ;)summerHereKids (2009-11-26)
@Popocapetli checked the firmware version and it's 4.1.8
i should be because i had tiger on it before (too slow)
now running debian, but i don't like linux.
is it possible that i would need a lower firmware version for os 9?
grts
zeppelin88 (2010-03-12)
Does anyone have a Swedish version of this system? This works fine, but it would be great to have it in Swedish ;)Thnx in advance!
Archae-Opteryx (2011-07-31)
Many thanks Sir. Very much appreciated.rn777 (2011-08-17)
Popocapetl,Thank you very much! Currently have Mac OS 9.0.4 running on a upgraded Power Mac 7500 with all your "goodies" installed. Runs great! The Jaguar theme makes it look pretty modern too.
P.S. - Make sure you burn it slow, or with a good burning program.
