In 1984, countless punks and skinheads came to the North German town of Hannover and turned the city center into a chaotic, beer-drenched mayhem, culminating in the complete devastation of a youth club. Its motto was 'Punks and Skins United', echoing the beginnings of the Chaostage in 1982 as protest against the police database of punks, skins and 'political hooligans'.
This event, the third Chaostage, marked the breakup of the German skinhead scene: before it, hanging around with your buddies and consuming large quantities of alcohol. Some neo-Nazi skins also tried to take part and provoked the anti-fascist skinheads, turning the event into a riot. After the '84 Chaostage, the German skinhead scene was split between neo-Nazi and antifascist fractions.

Bloody hell. I was there at the 1982 Chaostage. I was 16. It was amazing and exciting, the gigs and bands were brilliant, even though I did get beaten up with a truncheon by police. Oh, my misspent youth!
