Description:

True story of how Canada built one of the world's most advanced supersonic fighter planes, already back in the 1950s. When finished, the project was suddenly cancelled due to political changes. This is the full 3 hours dramatized documentary with lots of interesting details about construction of airplanes and jet engines, including authentic historic footage. I had to order the DVD from Canada. Good stereo sound, original fullscreen. DVDrip XviD 2-pass- Burn tested, runs well in my divX player. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118641/ MediaInfo analysis: Format/Info : Audio Video Interleave File size : 1.37 GiB Duration : 2h 53mn Overal bit rate : 1125 Kbps Video Format : MPEG-4 Visual Format profile : Streaming Video@L1 Format settings, BVOP : Yes Format settings, QPel : No Format settings, GMC : No warppoints Format settings, Matrix : Default Muxing mode : Packet Bitstream Codec ID : XVID Codec ID/Hint : XviD Duration : 2h 53mn Bit rate : 988 Kbps Width : 512 pixels Height : 368 pixels Display aspect ratio : 1.391 Frame rate : 23.976 fps Resolution : 8 bits Colorimetry : 4:2:0 Scan type : Progressive Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.219 Stream size : 1.20 GiB Writing library : XviD 1.2.0.dev47 (UTC 2006-11-01) Audio Format : MPEG Audio Format version : Version 1 Format profile : Layer 3 Codec ID : 55 Codec ID/Hint : MP3 Duration : 2h 53mn Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 128 Kbps Minimum bit rate : 128 Kbps Channel(s) : 2 channels Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz Resolution : 16 bits Stream size : 159 MiB Writing library : LAME3.97b Encoding settings : CBR

In the DVD extras, Aykroyd says that he was very proud to go home to Canada to participate in this serious, historic movie. I was surprised to see the interest in such a rare film, especially all the downloaders from Canada. Has it been censored over there? I may upload a more detailed documentary from the DVD extras later.

The Avro Arrow - the pride of Canada, and the shame of Canada. Our government bowed to pressure from our southern neighbours and cancelled an aircraft that was truly revolutionary in its day.
Tragically, the Arrow was cancelled, and replaced in the anti-Soviet intercontinental bomber role by the Bomarc
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIM-10_Bomarc).
A decade later, the Bomarc itself was phased out and replaced (ironically) by the (American made) CF-101 Voodoo
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CF-101_Voodoo).

The Voodoo never lived up to the capability of the Arrow, and the decision to scrap the Arrow in 1959 - and the political furor over the relative uselessness of the Voodoo (which was designed to fire nuclear-armed SAMs at the incoming bomber stream, and which the Canadian government would only allow under strict operating conditions) - lead the downfall of the Liberal government. John Diefenbaker's decision to scrap the Arrow ultimately led to his own defeat.
If you're ever in Ottawa, make the time to visit the Canadian Aviation Museum - the surviving pieces of the Arrow are on display there, and are well worth the visit. Likewise, a full-scale model is on display at the Toronto Aerospace Museum (located on the grounds of what used to be CFB Downsview).
Cheers... I'll be seeding this one for a looooooooong time. Thanks for sharing it, Kuthumi!

they did a bit of fudging.
"In 1997, the CBC broadcast the two-part mini-series, The Arrow about the Arrow program, which remains one of the most-watched CBC English-language television programs.[1] The production used a combination of archival film, remote-control flying models and computer animation for the flying and sequences. The flying models were built by Doug Hyslip of Calgary, but a full-scale replica of the Arrow was used in ground scenes. The mini-series' lack of historical accuracy forced the CBC to reclassify it as a "docu-drama", The Arrow[2] and it was subsequently advertised as entertainment rather than literal history.[citation needed" from wikipedia

w000ter (2008-08-21)

"Although the miniseries is based on history, it is a work of fiction, employs composite characters, and depicts some events that actually did not take place. It acknowledges that there is no hard evidence to support the fictional final scenes, depicting one Arrow that escaped the torches used to tear the other Arrows apart, in accord with allegations attributed to reporter June Callwood. There are errors in illustrations, such as the wing design (the classified design does not appear on the models used); an Apollo lunar module is shown (during the "destruct and dispose" operation) in its final configuration, although that design was arrived at in the later 1960s out of sheer necessity to reduce weight.
Production may have been inspired in part by Wetaskiwin resident Allan Jackson's efforts to build a full-scale model of the Arrow. The offer was made to complete the model and use it in the miniseries. However, a disservice was done when, to dramatize the torch-cut pieces being hauled away, the model itself (rather than imitation segments) was cut to pieces, the form in which it was returned to Mr. Jackson. As a result, he had to start almost from scratch to reconstruct the Arrow model."

w000ter (2008-08-21)

"Factual errors: Jim Chamberlain is depicted, in 1957, as having discovered the area-rule or "coke-bottle" shape for reducing compressibility during trans-sonic flight. The concept was in fact discovered by Richard Whitcomb at the Langely Research Center for which he received the 1954 Collier Award. The technical details were made public in 1955 and the F-102, F-104 and F-105 were already in service with this design. The wind-tunnel at Langely was able to allow Mach 2 testing of the Arrow because it too was using an area rule cross-section."

This is a must-see movie for any aviation fan, and it shows that Canada had its own Symington.
Diefenbaker’s destruction of the Arrow was as conspiratorial as Symington’s destruction of the B-49’s.
Unfortunately, neither was ever forced to answer for their actions, and there was never a movie made about the B-49 destruction.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH Kuthumi , Amazing .....

Thanks for uploading this Kuthumi, the word REALLY does need to get around! My Dad bought several of these DVDs simply to be able to pass them around. It's a bittersweet memory for my Dad, he remembers the program well growing up, and his Dad had some participation in the program too. I know the area well, Nobel Ontario is where the Orenda Engines plant was. Plunged the whole area into a mini-depression after the cancellation, and it has never recovered, what a shame.
As to OceanAngel's article above, I'm afraid it's a fake, as you can see by the disclaimer at the bottom of the 3 articles on the site.
However, there is a small bit of truth about them, and the possibility still exists that one escaped. See here:

Cheers! Bellarmine
