Cheers!

Futabayama won six in a row '36-'39 when there was only two a year.
Taiho won six in a row twice but not in the same calendar year ('62/3 & '66/7).
Asashoryu won seven in a row in '04/05 including all six in '05.

jbnt (2008-07-26)

yes, asashouryu won alo 6 basho in 2005, 1st to win all in 1 calender year and 7 in a row in total...to SCi fi- thanks again for all u do...J&T

AmaFan (2008-07-27)

Let's not forget about Futabayama either: he won all grand tournaments in 1937, 1938, 1942 and 1943 - but at the time, there were only two in a year.

iceblood (2008-07-27)

Erm, I mentioned Asashoryu & Futabayama, or am I the only one who can see my comment? :-)

Xabster (2008-07-27)

LOL @ iceblood...appearantly, yes :D (write only mode rules)
A little correction. In the first basho of '36, Futabayama only had a Jun-Jusho, so he only won 5 yushos is a row.
Otherwise, correct and fast answers! Good find people.
Just on an interesting sidenote: beginning from '35, Haguroyama won 5 bashos in a row, all the way from Jonokuchi through Juryo skyrocketing into Makuuchi.

SciFi-Sumo,
Will you be running the '82 winning techniques' special mentioned by one of the English speaking sumo commentators, recently?
Thank you for your continued efforts

AmaFan (2008-07-27)

Sorry iceblood, don't know how but somehow my eyes must have slipped over your first sentence... because I was "reacting" to your second two... silly me.
Huarachi, SciFi, that would be cool!

iceblood (2008-07-27)

Xabster, you're right. The January 1936 tournament was won by Tamanishiki not Futabayama. That will teach me to dig out my Sumo World Record Book next time. Andy Adams and Clyde Newton know a bit more than I do... ;-)

AmaFan (2008-07-27)

Is it just for me? About 1:36:30 in, just ahead of the Kotomitsuki-Futeno match, the movie freezes for a while. (Not that anything significant got lost.)

iceblood (2008-07-27)

Just had a quick look and you're right. I haven't watched day 13 in full yet but I'm glad to hear we're not missing anything important.
