The sequel of Project A takes place directly after the defeat of the pirates. Not only is Project A 2 a showcase for some great action, but also for Jackie Chan's talent as a filmmaker. The cinematography is beautiful and seems to be a foretaste of what Jackie was already planning for the two years younger film, Miracles. At the 1988 Hong Kong Film Awards, it was the winner for 'Best Action Choreography' and nominated for 'Best Editing'. Hong Kong Legends may haven't released it like the first part as a Platinum Edition, but they have still given it their full attention
Opening Menus
These look simply great. They open up with a 3D-logo of Project A 2 and then start rolling with some nice music playing. The music then transforms into the same theme that can be heard in the UK Promotional Trailer. The menu points are all on the top of the screen. The building from which Jackie performs a stunt, stays on the right side all the time. This gives some stylish effect and you'll feel like watching the movie only to see that great stunt
Picture Quality
Project A 2 is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and tt is anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs. Now, let me first say that you probably won't find any better picture quality for this film. I compared it to my German DVD release and the Hong Kong Legends version looked better by far. Background and foreground are very detailed and look sharp. Black levels are quite good as well. I also couldn't make out any colour bleed. Now the bad part about the picture quality is, that at some scenes the picture looks blurry. This mainly occurs during the first big fight sequence in the club. This obviously isn't Hong Kong Legends fault though. The same blurry picture occurs on my German DVD at exactly the same spots. So unless HKL haven't used the same print this should be due to the nature of filming. Bey Logan even referrs to this in his audio commentary. One other thing I realised is that at some scenes, the picture starts slightly flickering. This won't bother your enjoynment of watching the movie though. It is only a slight flickering.
I also noticed a thin vertical line right in the beginning of chapter 14 and some grain during the dancing scenes.
Overall though, a very acceptable picture quality
Audio Quality
A Cantonese and an English dubbed track are available. Both are in 5.1 Dolnby Digital. Dialogue sounds crisp and clear and is very much center based. The rear speakers are mainly used for ambient noise like in fight scenes and at times you can hear some of the music from the back
Subtitles
They are available in English and Dutch. As usual, the subtitles can be read quite easily and always appear at the correct moment. One thing I am a bit sad about, is the fact that they didn't translate the song Jackie sings during the outtakes. I never really bothered about this with other JC movies released by Hong Kong Legends, as it only came to my mind this time. This is due to the fact that we see Jackie singing the song on the top left of the screen, while the credits roll over the outtakes. I thought: 'Hmmm, why not translate the songs at the end of JC movies?'
Peace
