Wykonawcami będą wybitni artyści specjalizujący się w interpretacji muzyki dawnej: chór Collegium Vocale Ghent, zespół Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin, soliści: James Gilchrist, Hans-Jorg Mammel, Sebastian Noack, Svetlana Doneva, Christina Landshammer. Całością dyryguje Marcus Creed. źródło: tv.wp.pl Description: It is hard to understand the reasons why this monumental work remains unknown to the wider audiences. After all, the line-up requirements (16 solo parts!) do not explain everything. The fantastic poetic text of Passion by Barthold Heinrich Brockes, later a senator in Hamburg, was published in 1712. By the end of the century, it had had more than 10 editions and musical arrangements. Georg Philipp Telemann had completed his Brockes Passion just a few months before Handel’s score was published, and found the work of his great competitor decidedly superior. The composition was highly respected also by Johann Sebastian Bach, who frequently conducted performances of its fragments, and later used it as the model for his St Matthew Passion. It is true that until recently it was believed that in this work “bad taste meets the sublime, and the emphasis and affectation commune with the deep and reserved art” (Romain Rolland). Yet the new understanding of Handel’s composition discloses its uncommon strengths: the magnificent dramatic sense, especially in the treatment of the choir, beautiful group scenes, the captivating charm of cantilena in the arias, formal daring and differentiation, unique emphasising of the role of Christ paralleled by the limitation of the Evangelist’s tasks, and finally the heartbreaking dialogue of Christ and His Mother: the only such an arrangement in the history of music.
