This is the classic Jean-Pierre Ponnelle film starring Mirella Freni, Plácido Domingo and Christa Ludwig with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Vienna Philharmonic. It is a conceptual film; not a live stage performance. It was filmed for television in the early 1970s so the aspect ratio is 1:1.33. The picture quality also has a deliberate tint to it, sort of sepia, like an old photo. The musical performances are as close to perfect as you find in any recording of "Madama Butterfly." This VIDEO_TS file (ready to burn to DVD) contains options for both 2.0 stereo and 5.1 Digital Dolby Surround Sound, and optional English subtitles (the opera is sung in Italian).
