They could, herkimer. They could run the software file thru their own encryption scheme and it could not then be cracked. It also would not be able to be used by anyone. Software is readable, it must be so in order to be read by a computer and function... it must be "understandable" by your computer to function. Because of this, software protection schemes are dependant upon various strategies, algorithms, etc, that are buried in the software, and which can be found by anyone with the skills and patience. File and mail encryption works differently. While it is encrypted it cannot be read by your computer, or with any sort of cracking software. It simply looks like garbage, and the computer can send the copy of garbage even if it cannot "understand" what it is sending. The only way it can be turned from garbage back into understandable form is to possess the encryption key.

I was just curious... is pgp 10 out yet? I wanted to play with full disk encryption... or maybe there's a better alternative?

You can juse PGP 10Beta for Snow Leopard.
First install the ¨PGP 9.9.0 Desktop [k'd].zip¨
Then select Uninstall from the PGP menu,
Go to:

Enter your mail adress and receive the link to 10 Beta, install it restart.
Go to PGP menu hit ¨About PGP Desktop¨
Look Expires: Never

I am on Hackintosh 10.6 and the one thing I wanted to work does not. For some reason the Secure Virtual disk does not want to work. Every time I try and make a virtual disk it tell me that I can't and then quits.
I followed the instructions that came with the DL (twice) and I get the same response.
I then tried to update to 10.0 for snow Leopard but during the "Checking system" sequence it says this system can not run the update.
Any help would be great

If you have 10.6+, you'll need to completely de-install any version of PGP prior to 10. I was able to find instructions on how to completely remove PGP by Google'in it. Then download PGP Desktop 10 from TPB and you're all set. Just follow the instructions on how to install it.
