The message "This film has been formatted to fit your tv screen" is usually given as an excuse to chop off the picture at the sides to make a fullscreen version of a film originally made in widescreen. It is an insult to modern people who usually DO HAVE a widescreen monitor and do not want the black curtains on the side.

Kuthumi is right about the "making it fit last decades 4:3 CRT TV's" being bullshit, but until a dvd rip is available this upload is the best I've seen so far :)
