If you have Marvel Chronology Jun 94.torrent
Please post it here since it is missing from my collection

PeteThePIPster (2008-06-21)

You will never see June 1994 posted here by anyone who respects the original uploader's wishes. You should have stolen it before it was deleted.
Does everyone who is downloading "your" torrents know that they will never see any torrents for the years you will never see (ie the whole of 1979 through 1989 and 1997 to 2007) because you pissed off the guy who did all the work you so lazily ripped off?
You might feel you have the right to seed these torrents, but you, and those you are conning, will NEVER get the whole collection.

marvelatty (2008-06-21)

"You should have stolen it before it was deleted."
Yes, Chuck deleted that torrent because if he can't have it his way, then no one else can have it, either. I don't begrudge him. His choice.
I'm glad that Chuck has permission from Marvel to share every back issue in his collection. It would be kinda hypocritical to say that someone stole something from a guy who, well, stole something.
And of course the rest of the chronology will become available. Virtually every bit of intellectual property ever created has been posted as a torrent, a binary archive, or a direct download. Maybe Chuck will remain in his corner while more comics are posted, but they will most certainly be posted.

marvelatti: please contact me at
comicfan@rocketmail.com

marvelatty (2008-06-21)

Why, sure. I'll bet you'll be getting lots of e-mail soon, most of it unkind. Mine will be there within the next two minutes, relayed through an anonymous proxy. Can't be too careful!

kalhas (2008-06-21)

Really enjoyable to see marvelatty being the laywer of comicfan!

marvelatty (2008-06-21)

Kalhas: If I'm his lawyer, then I hope his forthcoming e-mail will include a wire transfer for my retainer. I don't come cheap...

Still snickering? Looks like most of the torrents are now seeded. That's okay with you, right? You're a big-time file sharer. You're down with the whole more stuff, more sites mantra.
Can you smell the monopoly in forcing people to visit (and join) certain sites to download certain files? Probably not. Thinking hurts.

kalhas (2008-06-21)

I can see that you are very happy with this story. Well done. Well done...

marvelatty (2008-06-21)

Yes. I've enjoyed myself. But it's coming to an end. I found this debate by accident, and I couldn't resist taking part. I have no connection with 'comicfan' (who didn't send me e-mail, by the way) nor with Chuck, really, but I abhor people who camouflage their vanity and their ambition with beneficence. An anonymous contribution is the only kind without strings.

kalhas (2008-06-21)

It's really funny to see what is written in a forum and then to comment here right?

kalhas (2008-06-21)

Ambition? Are you crazy dude? Seriously.

marvelatty (2008-06-21)

Pretty funny, yes. I only comment about the really stupid ones. Or anything with 'snicker' in it.
I am serious about ambition. There's all kinds. Do you know Chuck personally?

kalhas (2008-06-21)

I am sure that everyone reading this can see who is really the stupid! Enough wasted time with you!

Kalhas wrote:

Uh, yes, I'm sure they can...

It's a noble sentiment, but I don't think Chuck (or any of the other comic book uploaders) will see the disrespect of their actions toward the hundreds of writers and artists whose work is made available here and elsewhere without their consent.
But you're right, of course: we should not disrespect Chuck by making his work available here without his consent. That's ... piracy!
To borrow a phrase from kalhas, our friend from Duhweebistan: now who's really the stupid?

How strange. No one from the h33t comics forum can register here.
Except for kalhas. Hmmm...

CelciusBob (2008-06-22)

How hard is it to answer their posts on the h33t forum instead of doing here? Now, who's really the stupid?

marvelatty (2008-06-22)

Wow, this 'the stupid' thing is taking off!
I better trademark it fast.
PS. Since you asked, kalhas is the stupid.

CelciusBob (2008-06-22)

Avoiding the main point?

marvelatty (2008-06-22)

Sorry. I thought it was a question, not a main point, and I chose to ignore it. But since you insist: I don't answer 'their' posts on h33t because I like answering them here.
And, as an homage to Chuck, l intend to answer h33t posts here, exclusively here, and if anyone copies one of my posts to h33t, I will immediately stop answering posts everywhere, forever.
PS. I know your cousin, Fahrenheit Phil. Now he is definitely the stupid!

marvelatty (2008-06-22)

I see that comicfan has started a Yahoo forum about the Marvel Chronology.
In all seriousness...
I support comicfan's right (and everyone's right) to post torrents anywhere, without 'permission' from an 'original uploader' (who, after all, didn't have permission from a copyright holder).
I don't support comicfan himself because I don't know him.
It's one thing to re-post Chuck's torrents; it's another to set oneself up as the official moderator for discussion of those torrents.
I don't support that. If anyone is to moderate a discussion of the Marvel Chronology torrents, it should be Chuck himself, unless he appoints a surrogate, which he has not done. It's a fine line, for sure, but I'm with Chuck on this one.
If comicfan appreciates even a little bit the support I've given to him here, I hope he returns the favor and deactivates his Yahoo group.

PeteThePIPster (2008-06-22)

Quote "I'm glad that Chuck has permission from Marvel to share every back issue in his collection. It would be kinda hypocritical to say that someone stole something from a guy who, well, stole something.

What is at issue is not about Marvel but the work done in compiling a heck of a lot of files into torrents and the personal wishes of that person as to how his work is distributed.
Comicfan has disregarded the wishes expressed by the uploader and that is the issue. As a result he and anyone joining this collection at TPB will have to put together the remainder of the torrents for the years still outstanding.
Will Comicfan take the time to finish this series? I doubt it. Too much like hard work.

marvelatty (2008-06-22)

I see that comicfan has closed his Yahoo forum about the Marvel Chronology.
That was the right thing to do. Thank you very much. The rest will sort itself out.
Maybe a few people now realize the hypocrisy in protecting the 'rights' of an original uploader while trammeling the rights of a copyright holder. In file sharing, no one has any rights. It's important to realize that and accept it. Once you do, every other concession is easy.
As for Chuck's chronology - he will post the rest of it, maybe on h33t, maybe to the members of his list (which would then make him not a file sharer but an out-and-out bootlegger). Either way, the chronology will spread far and wide.
My interest now is to see what Chuck does. I know what he is and I know what he'd like to be. I can't wait to learn which prevails...

PeteThePIPster (2008-06-22)

"In file sharing, no one has any rights. It's important to realize that and accept it. Once you do, every other concession is easy."
Sounds more like anarchy than anything else.
And everyone has rights, even in filesharing. It is a matter of courtesy if someone asks that something is done, then others respect that request.
Isn't that what happens every time a request to seed a torrent is made? A simple request made by the creator of the torrent.
There is no diference at all in making any other request when a torrent is posted.
Except when that request is so rudely ignored and everyone suffers because of the actions of one opportunist.

marvelatty (2008-06-22)

No one has rights in file sharing because it's premised upon the exchange of other people's property without their permission. You may argue that the other person - for example, Microsoft - doesn't deserve exclusive rights or doesn't deserve to earn massive profits from those rights, and morally you might have a case. But legally, you're sunk. Should comicfan have reposted Chuck's torrent here? A 'should' question is a moral question. Can he post them here? That's a legal question. In file-sharing, we disregard the law, so the answer is yes.
What bothers me is selectively applying a law to some but not to others. The law says: you can't share what another person legally owns without his permission. We ignore that law. Fine and dandy. Will anyone in this thread stand up for Microsoft when it demands that we not share Vista? No. But everyone stands up for Chuck when he demands that we not share his torrents until he says we can. That's a problem for me.
In the past, I've witnessed (and suffered) the selective application of law based on race. I'm extraordinarily sensitive to it. I know it's a huge reach to compare this issue to a police officer applying the law differently to one man because he's white and another because he's black. But the core injustice is the same.
If you're going to drag me out of a car and sit me down on the roadside for an hour because my inspection sticker isn't current, then you'd better do the same to the white guy in the nice car whose inspection sticker also isn't current. Often, it doesn't happen that way.
If you're going to tell me that I can't repost a torrent because it 'belongs' to someone else, then you'd better tell 'someone else' that he can't post the torrent initially because its content belongs to someone else. Which is the case here.
I'm happy to sit on the roadside for no justifiable reason if everyone else has to do it, too.
Once you start selectively deciding who sits and who doesn't, though, you've got trouble.
(Thank you, by the way, for your reasonable reply.)

marvelatty (2008-06-22)

A few folks have been pestering TPB for my e-mail address. As if that's going to work! To stop the pesterers, I invite y'all to send the love to this disposable e-mail account: marvelatty@fastmail.es.
I'll likely delete any e-mail that doesn't contain (a) a notice that money is waiting in my PayPal account, (b) a haiku about file-sharing and/or Chuck, or (c) racy photos of exotic beauties.
Now please stop pestering the Cap'n, won't you?

PeteThePIPster (2008-06-22)

"Thank you, by the way, for your reasonable reply"
You're welcome.
As far as filesharing goes, if I don't make money from it and nobody loses money from it, I can sleep easily.
To me it is the digital equivalent of lending a comic to a friend to read. If any of the comics publishers feel they should be going after anyone for that I give up hope for common sense.
I can't speak for those who put nothing into the pockets of the publishers. I spend over $200 a month with Marvel so I don't feel guilty at all if I browse a new title I had no intention of ever buying. If I don't like it I'll bin it.
As for Comicfan he is very welcome to put a Marvel torrent together and post the identical same comics as there are in this torrent, making the changes to the filenames and assembling the torrent after countless hours of downloading. Just so long as he doesn't steal the original uploader's personal time and effort. That's what I have issue with, not the legal ownership.
Marvel made their money in May 1994 on these comics, no-one made money putting the May 1994 torrent together but time and effort were still spent and Comicfan did not respect that.

The 'atty' in 'marvelatty' is shorthand for attorney. It has nothing to do with being or not being an 'avid follower' of Marvel comics.
In the 60s and 70s, I bought every title Marvel printed. The guy at the newsstand got new issues every Thursday afternoon and Sunday morning. If I missed an issue, I bought it by mail from one of the early back-issue dealers like Howard Rogofsky in Queens or Robert Bell.
When I could no longer buy a comic for a quarter, I stopped buying them. So I was an avid follower of Marvel comics until about 1976.
Now I'm a very lazy follower of Marvel comics. I tend to download newly created torrents even if I already have the comics inside them. I have a single 1TB (terabyte) drive set aside for Marvel comic books, graphic novels, etc., and it's getting full. I like knowing they're there.

marvelatty (2008-06-22)

I'll try one more time, then quit:
Stan Lee, et. al., don't want you posting their work on torrent sites. You do. No problem.
Chuck doesn't want you posting his work on this site. Someone does. A problem.
Saying 'thank you' to Stan Lee in the torrent doesn't cut it. Saying 'thank you' is a far cry from permission. It's not the same. But here goes, anyway: Thank you, Stan, Thank you, Chuck. All better now?
If we can ignore the wishes of Stan Lee (or substitute name of your favorite writer or artist with intellectual property rights in an item), can we not also ignore the wishes of Chuck?
It seems such a simple proposition.
Good-bye, and good luck.

Wow - that didn't take long. Someone has already taken over from Chuck on h33t uploading new months in the Marvel Chronology.
See? I told you so.
That's what happens, Chuck, when you bluff once too often. There's always somebody else ready and happy to take over. You keep giving 'more money to charities than most people make in a lifetime', as you modestly wrote, and others will handle the comics.
And can you believe it? Chuck made some nasty public comments on h33t about his successor. Why would such a generous, big-hearted guy like Chuck do such a thing? After all, the new guy isn't reposting Chuck's torrents. He's posting his own. But Chuck takes the low road, anyway.
The majority of people who don't comment on forums are getting a glimpse of the real Chuck now, the arrogant, self-important, self-serving Chuck who 'has people on the ground', as he boldly wrote, trying to learn my identity.
If you don't want to post more comics, Chuck, then keep quiet, please, and let others do it.
We don't need you.

marvelatty (2008-06-24)

The guy on h33t who has begun posting the Marvel Chronology where Chuck left off wrote:
"Please fell free to repost, take credit, or do whatever. I don't own or pretend to own this stuff, nor was the work expended to compile it particularly odious. The people who deserve credit are the ones who wrote the books in the first place."
I can now die in peace. Someone gets it! I appreciate your work, friend, and I admire your attitude. The only people who matter are the writers and artists who created the comic books that we're uploading without their permission. We don't own a damn thing.
But we'll never convince Chuck. The spotlight is off, buddy. The Marvel Chronology will finish, with or without you. Feel free to download it (and seed, seed seed!). Tell your 'people on the ground' to seed, too.
(What kind of douche-bag actually writes in a public forum that he has 'people on the ground' looking for someone. Jeez...)
PS. That new guy in the forum requested issues 1-19 of Heroes for Hire. You're the moderator. You going to post them issues, or what? So far all you've done is make a smart-ass comment to the guy. Better put some more people on the ground...
I give Chuck a week before he gets his panties in a bunch again and resigns as moderator of the h33t comics forum. Any takers?

comicfan (2008-06-25)

Is by chance that another marvelatty signed yesterday in the h33t forum and left a comment on the best storage comics topic?

marvelatty (2008-06-26)

Nope- was me.
