Yeah I have a problem launching as well. I've tried running in compatibility mode down to win98 with the same results. (windows 7) Even tried it in XP Mode (virtual PC) with no luck. Ideas?

JohnnyAction (2012-04-23)

Same problem here. Crashes after intro videos and a few seconds of menu music. XP SP3. Solutions?

If your game crashes on startup (WinXP):
1. Install the game.
2. Apply the patch (use browse, and remember where the patch went, notice that it installs to folder/folder/DOWNLOADS).
3. Go to where you installed the patch, inside the DOWNLOAD folder you will have files, COPY them to Cataclysm install folder (overwrite).
4. Now go to torrented files and copy cataclysm.exe (overwrite)
The solution is simple, the patch does not APPLY the patch. It only EXTRACTS the files to a folder. You have to manually copy the files to patch the game and then apply the crecked *.exe.

Running the Game on Windows Vista / Windows 7:
You need to the Cataclysm.exe's "Compatibility Settings" to "Windows NT 4.0". Both Homeworld and HW: Cataclysm need to be set to Windows NT in order to initialize Windows Vista / 7's Direct3D to OpenGL renderer properly. Once in game, make sure you use the OpenGL settings for graphics - D3D will usually cause a 'flickering' effect that makes the in game GUI difficult or impossible to navigate. The OpenGL driver does not have this problem.
Be sure to enable "OpenGL -> Triple Buffering" within your video card's graphics settings. Alternatively, you can add the " /triple " command line switch to a short cut to enable it in game. If you have the option for "Force Z Buffer Depth" leave those settings on "Default". The in game textures for Text will become impossible to read and the ship textures can get fouled up. Same goes for super-high Anisotropic / Anti Aliasing settings. It is best to leave those on the 'Application Managed' settings.
Sound Problems:
Usually fixed by setting the "Compatibility Settings" to "Windows NT 4.0", as Relic programmed Homeworld's game code to force sound to Wave Out mode under Windows NT by default. Since HW: Cataclysm uses Homeworld's source code, the same holds true. If you still experience a sound issue even after switching compatibility to Windows NT, using the /waveout command line switch may not help.
Trainer Problems:
If you use a trainer, make sure it's running with "Compatibility Settings" to set to "Windows NT 4.0". This way it can effect the same memory space Windows sets aside for the game to run in - otherwise the memory space is "locked" to anything not also running in Windows NT mode, and the trainer can not access it. Checking the 'Run As Administrator' box often helps, as well.
Making the game run smoothly:
Usually not an issue with today's hardware, but if you are having difficulty with a smoothly running game, you can try setting the texture / palette pool to a larger size in game, or try adding the " /heap xxxxxxx " command to the command line, were "xxxxxxx" is the value of memory you wish to allocate to Homeworld / HW: Cataclysm. You can Google "Homeworld /heap" to find suggested heap values, or experiment to find your own.
If yo wish to find the other command line switches, you can either Google them or type " /? " at the end of a shortcut link / within a CLI.
I hope this helps any who are experiencing difficulties.
Enjoy!

If your patch exe freezes run it with /x parameter.

I was really skeptical about the remake of Homeworld, but apparently the rights to the game were sold to Gearbox in 2013 and they've changed it from Homeworld HD to Homeworld Remastered. The remake is going to be far more extensive than just adding higher resolution textures. Check it out: http://www.homeworldremastered.com/#1
