SYNOPSIS, from Channel 4 Film:
Surfing documentary becomes the mother of all chillout films - a 20 minute trip into the waves set to Pink Floyd's psychedelic Echoes
For a large chunk of Crystal Voyager you wonder what all the fuss is about.
The first 50-odd minutes of David Elfick's revered documentary follow board-riding cameraman George Greenough in his quest for an empty wave. Fed up with the tourists crowding his beach, Californian George decides to build a yacht to take him to that virgin surf which "can't be reached by jumbo jet". He's very practical. He roots through scrap heaps, whips up a spinaker from an old hot air balloon and fashions a blast-furnace out of a vacuum cleaner. It takes a while, but finally the 'Morning Light' is ready to sail and, to the stirring strains of G Wayne Thomas's blues-rock songs, George and his pals - Richie West and legendary surf champion Nat Young - head into the mystic to live off the ocean and ride on the coat-tails of its majesty.
And that, essentially, is that. The surfing shots are pleasing (particularly of Young, who's the coolest man you've ever seen), but not exactly inspiring. George (who rides his board kneeling down) is pleasant enough company, especially since the words 'ripped', 'gnarly', and 'dude' seem to have escaped his vocabulary. But so far it's been nothing to write home about. Indeed, sometimes the only thing holding your interest is George's hairdo - an alarming, strawy hybrid of pudding bowl and mullet. But then, with 20 minutes to go, Elfick's documentary does the decent thing and hands over to one of George's own films. It's called 'Echoes' after the psychedelic Pink Floyd track that accompanies it. Shot on a high resolution camera strapped to George's back, nothing is allowed to distract from the abstract pictures of the waves themselves. Those words that surfers spew - 'awesome', 'far out', 'righteous' - you can see why they use them when you watch Greenough's essential piece. But they don't come close to describing the terrible alien beauty of these images.
Verdict
The documentary may potter around a bit before it gets to the crunch of Echoes, but good things come to those who wait. Prepare those munchies, hold your breath and then let it all go.

Product Description:
Crystal Voyager is the legendary 1972 surf film by director David Elfick, famous for integrating the music of Pink Floyd (Echoes) with some of the most stunning photography ever. Pink Floyd actually took the footage from Crystal Voyager for their stage show projections for Echoes. The last 25 minutes is an almost unbroken underwater trip of a thousand psychedelic translucent tints, set to Pink Floyd's classic Echoes. The surfing equivalent to the final tripped-out 30 minutes of 2001 A Space Odyssey! Recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1 and digitally remastered, this DVD features Gliding With George: A Conversation With George Greenough, with exclusive extracts from his forthcoming film Dolphin Guide, An Interview With David Elfick (Director and Producer of Crystal Voyager, New Front and many other cult films), Hot To Trot: A Classic Animated 'stoner' film featuring The Legendary Captain Goodvibes, a picture gallery comprised of stills and original film posters.
