This is a rather belated answer, laptopdog. I guess you must have found the answer elsewhere by now. Still, since it's been asked, others may also be interested. The format here is .avi. This is a container format, meaning that there are several possible types of coding of the content. To play it, you'll need the right codec (short for coder/decoder or compressor/decompressor, depending on who you ask and in what context). The codec is used to transform the data storage format to images ready to display, using methods to reclaim or approximate data lost in the compression of the data.
As evidenced by the title of the torrent, the codec for these files is xvid, a set of compression/decompression standards. It's a very common codec, so it'll play on almost any computer.
As for people using VLC: No worries. The VLC default distribution contains nearly every possible codec. Being as popular as it is (and, importantly, non-proprietary), xvid is one of those codecs.
I hope this may be helpful to someone!
