Do you happen to have The Black Incal? I remember reading it in the early 80's and it was one of the most fascinating stories I've ever read.

ALNoir, you're on the fucking money.
This is just "Before the Incal" with awful digital recoloring by Hum. Pub. There is a torrent of the first four books of the Incal still on TPB and there is another torrent of Books 05 and 06 seemingly tracked by TPB but not obtainable through searching TPB itself. Not sure where you can find the torrent, but it is out there.
Then again, I don't want to disparage this torrent since Before is worth the read, even if the coloring is way off. But, note, that there is a big difference between this and the Incal proper and reading this will paint your reading of the Incal in a very specific direction that might not be intended by the authors.
