Description:

By "remastered" I don't mean the studio has produced a remastered DVD. I can't put the remastered under quotes on the name of the files sorry. By "remastered" I mean I have worked to find and use the "best" avisynth technology on the DVD source, and applied the strongest denoising/sharpening that wouldn't remove any noticable precision (and obv. thanx to high quality x264 encoding not loose anything noticeable there too). I also mean by that that people should know if the source has been altered (other than the implicit loss thx to lossy encoding) and how. Some movie, or some scenes in some movies are designed grainy. Here the grain on the DVD comes from the limitation of the format, if not their encoding. I see many releases that don't specify that they've pre-processed the source, and I would like that to change especially thinking that most of the time it's for the best. The result there is definitly superior to the DVD imho, altough in a pair of short and dark scenes, the process produce some unwanted artifacts on a surface here or there in the background. Might have had not to use it on these scenes but they're really short so this shouldn't be a concern. Playing the file : As a result, you don't want to use any real-time denoising, post-processing etc on the movie, there's nothing to be gained there; in fact, this would decrease the quality of the output, beside using unnecessary cpu power. The hebrew subtitles should be shown in the right order, they're right to left, I've checked. I made myself the french subtitles as I couldn't find them on the web (yeah that's how much I love this movie), so feel free to thank me for that, as I'm quite happy with what I did there (tough it seems quite funny writing that in english!). Anyway.. the most important : this is a masterpiece ! And one that not enough people have had the opportunity to watch (the movie, I've heard, made a lot of waves in Germany, in the form of stupid bashing focusing on the first sequence of the movie, which altough agressive, opens on a very delicate movie). Nevertheless the lead actor Jürgen Vogel won the silver Bear in Berlin and the french-german office for youth (yes, youth) gave it its 2006 award. Well for sure this is not an easy movie, not that it uses abstract language or references, but that it might leave you a little bit choked and changed, aka : not entertainment, hopefully enlightnment. A few scenes might hurt some sensibilities (violence, nudity..). I'm totally against synopsis, I feel someone waste my pleasure when he unfolds anything about the narrative of a movie, books etc so I won't do it. You'll google it if you need that. Thanks for your efforts, man! Downloading it now. By the way, any reason you only spent 850 Mb on it instead of e.g. 2000? Just curious.

eluent (2012-04-19)

I didn't sacrificed one bit of quality, and 850Mb is what I got from this DVD.

Thanks eluent. It could have been excellent, but...
Ok, right off the top of my head I can think of 3 reasons that "this movie doesn't get the tenth of the love it deserves", as you said.
1. The title - I'm sure most people think it's a German dubbed version of "Free Willy". You know the one about the whale.
2. It's too explicit. The violence is unnecessarily graphic to make a point that could be made with "fade to black", or "pan up", or anything really.
3. It's too long - by about an hour. It would have much better focus at 1hr 45min than it has at 2hrs 45min.
These are just technical reasons. However I find the plot perfectly legitimate - there is no B.S. Absolutely true to life - no contrived drama. Even though I would have preferred a movie that explores the effect that hormones, socially prescribed access to sex, Nordic history and mythology, all have on "free will".
Just as theft is socially prescribed by the way wealth is allocated, rape is socially prescribed by the way sex is allocated. It is ultimately an issue of power not sex. So is suicide, socially prescribed by the way sanity is allocated, and is not the ultimate act of free will. These are just the superficial manifestations of these forms of violence (against the other, against a faceless society & against the self). For the deeper reasons we need to look at archetypes of violence. In the case if the Germans - Grendel in "Beowulf". But then that would be a different movie...

Well if you rate it 7.5 that's still a good rating, and an excellent one for a basicaly unrated, ignored if not despised movie.
I din't find it too long, I can watch Satantango and feel disturbed from my meditation when something's happening, but that's just me.
The more important case is about the graphic depiction of the violence. Hard to discuss without spoiling stuff for potential viewers so I'll just say this : if you don't feel the gravity of it, then you're halfway to the real monstrosity in movies, where you see countless death that don't have any meaning. Beside, in Der Freie Wille, the gravity of the crime pertains to the the gravity of its consequences, hence to the core of the movie. That's how I took it, but obviously feelings diverges there, and you can't talk someone out of feeling too moved by a depiction of a violent act, maybe you can talk them in realizing it's actually not that often a movie show you a convincing crime scene -and since we basically all have watched countless filmed criminal act, that makes it all the more harder to achieve.

fakeidmuhammad (2012-10-13)

I suggested cutting the running time down strictly for improving the "focus" of the movie's theme, which is as you say the gravity of the crime's "consequences, hence to the core of the movie". I think it wanders a little bit from that. Usually, but not always, imposing the discipline of restricting the time fixes that.

thx Jalucian,
actually, if I had let my computer worked for about 3 days instead of one, I would have gotten something way under 700MB!
The funny thing is, people would have then dismissed the torrent, assuming something under CD size has to be of bad quality..
