Description:

Japan were one of the most innovative and individualistic bands of the late 70s, early 80s, head and shoulders above most of their comtemporaries with intellegent, finely crafted music and lyrics that you can listen to over and over again and still come back for more. There is not a bad track on this album, and like all great music, this album stands the test of time very well indeed.. Digitally remastered from tapes of the band's anthology album, this edition boasts four bonus tracks, two enhanced videos, specially written sleevenotes and rare artwork. Amid the English punk scene, Japan's exotic variant of glam rock had seemed wildly out of step. By the time punk's first wave faded, though, Japan had built up enough of a following that a best-of compilation, 1981's ASSEMBLAGE, was released to highlight material from their first three records and a few rarities. Collectors should note that ASSEMBLAGE exists in a number of different versions, each with different bonus tracks. Bonus material aside, the tracks here--two from each album, and four from various vinyl-only singles--constitute what is, without question, the strongest record from the first phase of Japan's career. The record opens with the brittle guitar and growling lyrics of "Adolescent Sex" and continues with the quartet of "Communist China" through "Life In Tokyo," all of which describe exotic locals in oblique and intriguing terms, defines the glamoriented site of the band. The second half, which includes "Quiet Life," with its hectic drums, percolating synthesizers, and rubbery bass offset by tremendously controlled guitar, and the pair of impressive covers, "All Tomorrow's Parties" and "I Second That Emotion," examines the band's move towards funk and world beat. ASSEMBLAGE is a stellar collection . 1. (04:14) - Adolescent Sex 2. (04:45) - Stateline 3. (02:45) - Communist China 4. (06:49) - ...Rhodesia 5. (05:01) - Suburban Berlin 6.
