--------------------------------------
Dramatized documentary of a famous Roman murder trial which established the law career of Cicero.
Directed by Dave Stewart, and based on a genuine trial record, it's set in Rome in 81BC. Sextus Roscius is accused of murdering his father, and found guilty he'll face an agonising death. However, the stakes are just as high for Cicero, the lawyer defending him. If he wins the case, he could be killed.
Forget the Coliseum. Forget the Circus Maximus. The greatest public spectacle in Rome took place in the Forum, the political and spiritual heart of the Republic. It was here, in the shadow of the Temple of Jupiter, that the bloody and brutal passions of RomeÂ’s leading citizens were laid out for the mob to see.
Rome was a dangerous place. There was no police force to safeguard its streets. And there was no state prosecution service. So the law was only open to the rich and famous. Roman trials were packaged as entertainment, with life or death outcomes. It was such a theatrical experience that the Roman word for actor and lawyer are the same. Thousands flocked to see the spectacle, drawn by the prospect of lurid tales of murder, debauchery, intrigue and violence. ItÂ’s the same principle that motivates millions of readers to buy the tabloids and celebrity magazines today.
