It was here, in the shadow of the Temple of Jupiter, that the bloody and brutal passions of RomeÂ’s leading citizens were laid out for the mob to see. Rome was a dangerous place. There was no police force to safeguard its streets. And there was no state prosecution service. So the law was only open to the rich and famous. Roman trials were packaged as entertainment, with life or death outcomes. It was such a theatrical experience that the Roman word for actor and lawyer are the same. Thousands flocked to see the spectacle, drawn by the prospect of lurid tales of murder, debauchery, intrigue and violence.
