I'm not convinced that this was considered "Hard Rock" even in 1973.

Maybe not Hard Rock (whatever that may be - and this from a Led Zep, Alice Cooper, King Crimson etc., fan).
But given that the alternative at the time, as those who were alive then will remember, was Suzi Quatro, The Rubettes and Showaddywaddy, I considered it pretty hard and pretty rocky, first time round.
Also, name me a band that wouldn't murder for the opening track(s?) Funeral for a Friend/And Love Lies Bleeding.
