Set in a small mining village in Korea's Kangwondo Province, emerging director Jeon Soo Il's new independent film With a Girl of Black Soil tells the heartbreaking story of a young girl, her ailing father, and her mentally ill brother. Director and screenwriter Jeon Soo Il (Time Between Dog and Wolf) brings awareness to various issues surrounding the mining community and the detrimental effects on the families' livelihood. Jeon concocted the basic premise for this film after being genuinely moved by some of the local stories he heard while shooting Time Between Dog and Wolf in the mining area. Opting to divert the focus away from the obvious tragic elements, Jeon tells the story from a little girl's point of view, weaving a beautiful message of hope. With a Girl of Black Soil won numerous international nods including two Grand Prix awards - one at the 10th Deauville Asian Film Festival and another at the 10th Barcelona Asian film festival, beating out heavy contenders like Lee Chang Dong's Secret Sunshine. The film is anchored by heavy-duty caliber performances especially from child actress Yoo Yeon Mi (M) who plays the courageous nine-year-old girl and Jo Young Jin (Secret Sunshine) who portrays the down-on-luck father.
