Introduction ---------------------------------------------------- On May 5th, 2008, Trent Reznor released The Slip, Nine Inch Nails 7th studio album, for free online. As was the case with Trent's previous online releases The Slip was available in multiple formats including a new format, 24-bit/96-KHz WAVE. 24/96 (or 96/24 as it is also known) is higher than CD quality, but requires a special setup to play. Connecting a computer up to a good sound system can be a bitch, but nearly every home theatre today has a DVD Player and a lot of them have surround systems that support 24/96 or higher resolution audio. That's where The Slip DVD-Audio comes in. DVD-Audio allows 24/96 quality music to be played back on a fairly standard home theatre setup. The only catch is you need a DVD-Audio player. 02. Menus screwed up on 4:3 screens Preferred Version for HDTV, Widescreen SDTV and Computer Monitors. DVD-Video Side Video/Menus Created in DVD-Lab Pro using Artwork from the DVD- Audio Side Audio Dolby Digital 2.0 Transcoded using Sonic Foundry Soft Encode DTS 48/24 Transcoded using Surcode DVD DTS Labels Created in GIMP 2.2 03. Questions ----------------------------------------------------- Q: What do I need to play The Slip DVD-Audio? A: DVD-Audio is not the same as DVD-Video; it's different specification, so the first thing you'll need is a DVD-Audio Player. Fortunately many high quality DVD players have native support for DVD-Audio. While working on the Slip DVD-Audio I tested my releases using a $150 Panasonic DVD-F87 5-Disc DVD Player. Due to the Nazi-esque tactics of the music industry DVD-Audio players cannot output lossless sound over an unencrypted digital connection. So unless you're using an HDMI player with support for encrypting DVD- Audio with HDCP you're going to be stuck using the 6-ch output of your player to connect to the 6/channel input on your pre-amp or home theatre. Nearly every quality play/receiver combination will be able to support this. Please Note: The Slip DVD-Audio uses no copy-protection MAKE LEGAL COPIES OF THIS DISC Q: Why are their two different versions? A: Because DiscWelder, the DVD-Audio authouring application I used does not appear to support using multiple subpictures In order to make the disc display correctly in both aspects you require one subpicture for Pan and scan and another for 16:9. DiscWelder seems to only support 4:3, so I had to cheat to get native 16:9. It's entirely possible this is due to my own ignorance of the application. As for why I didn't just do one 4:3 version? Because. Q: Is this legal? A: The Slip was released by Nine Inch Nails under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States license. That means anyone is free to make a derivative work on the condition that they attribute the original artist and they release it under the same or similar license. While I did not alter the music in anyway I do believe that the additional authouring of the disc, the creation of menus and such, constitutes an original work. As always if the content owners have an issue, please contact me. Q: Why doesn't the DVD-Video side have DTS 96/24? A: Because the program required to encode DTS 96/24 is very expensive and none of my friends in the Film/Music industries had access to an encoder. If anyone would like to transcode the 96/24 files to DTS for me I would be happy to add them to my disc images. 04. Personal Notes ---------------------------------------------------- I made this disc for two reasons: I love NIN and I want to give back to the community. Trent Reznor has been extremely good to us by giving away The Slip and licensing it under the Creative Commons and it's important that we give back.
