El abogado defensor del joven Allen es Jake Ehrlich (Jon Hamm), un célebre adalid de las causas civiles. El fiscal, Ralp McIntosh (David Strathairn) intenta demostrar que la obra es obscena mientras se esfuerza por entenderla. Los testigos de la acusación son una profesora inglesa (Mary-Louise Parker) que considera el poema en cuestión obsceno y un profesor universitario (Jeff Daniels) que tiene una idea muy definida de lo que es y lo que no es buena literatura. Los testigos de la defensa son intelectuales de los años cincuenta (Treat Williams y Alessandro Nivola) que defienden los méritos culturales y artísticos del poema.
