Description:
'Silver On Black' is ο record in every sense of the word.
It literally records the diverse history of the underground dance by capturing it at its creative height in the late '80s. Every style of dance-music is represented in some mutated form.
Tyree's 'Turn Up The Bass' begins with sampled screams from Public Enemy's Bring The Noise' and then carves its way through a hectic Chicago House rhythm with Kool Rack Steady's rhyming couplets always proclaiming the power of hip-hop.
D-Mob's 'We Call It Acieed' will probably be remembered as one of the ultimate triumphs of the headline summer of acid-house,
whilst Electro's 'Jibaro' will be remembered as the anthem of the dance-rock groove known as the Balearic Beat, that hybrid of Chicago house, underground beats and alternative disco which briefly took refuge on the dancefloors of Ibiza and the world.
Reese And Santonio's Rock To The Beat' is sampled, programmed and premeditated mayhem from Detroit's Techno scene;
Richie Rich's 'Salsa House' combines Chicago and Cuba in a two-way culture clash;
The Cookie Crew's 'Born This Way' is double trouble hip-hop from south London's most successful girl-rappers,
and Simon Harris's 'London's Finest' uses ska beat break to create a rapid action ragamuffin sound featuring loose talk OJs Asher D. and Daddy Freddy.
'Silver On Black' captures donee music at a point of transition. With the technological overdrive of 'acid house' now trapped by its restricted potential and poor public image, dance music has returned to its roots, back to the emotional voice of black America: the soul that made it possible….
