Hur gör jag om dessa till avi. eller något annat format som går att se i DVD-spelaren?
How do I convert these files into avi. or any other format that a common DVD-player can read?

.mkv-filer spelar man förslagsvis upp med VLC media player ( www.videolan.org/vlc/ ).. men det finns många spelare som kan hantera .mkv-filer.

Answer to a couple of questions:
1. The MKV files can be converted into AVI using "GOM encoder". Completely free and dynamic program"
2. The subtitles are not merged with the video, ergo they CAN be removed, yes.
