Het verhaal speelt zich af in de Engelse societykringen van de 'roaring twenties'. Hoofdpersoon Lydia Aspen is een mooi maar nogal verlegen meisje. Dat laatste verandert snel nadat ze een fortuin heeft ge rfd. Plotseling strijden er meerdere mannen om haar gunsten, en Lydia krijgt er steeds meer plezier in ze allemaal aan het lijntje te houden.
