The default user "ubuntu" has root access. To execute a command as root, login to the "ubuntu" and use the "sudo" command for example:
sudo apt-get update
Then enter the "ubuntu" password which is also "ubuntu".
To login as root use:
sudo -i

Anyone having trouble with network connection try refreshing DHCP with:
sudo dhclient -r && sudo dhclient
