True Romance - The Tarantino Cut (new extended & recut version)

Description:
Think you've seen True Romance? Think again.
You certainly haven't seen the film that its writer envisioned.
The original screenplay by Quentin Tarantino, much like his Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, had an answers-first, questions-later structure to it. And that, more than anything else, was what made it interesting.
True Romance was written, very carefully written, to be a non-linear story. And Tony Scott, the director, shot it that way. But at some point during the editing process, Scott got cold feet. Worried that the audience wouldn't understand the movie, he decided to put all the scenes in chronological order.
And he ruined the film.
The story of True Romance was supposed to be divided into three parts. Part one: the characters know more than the audience. Part two: the audience catches up. Part three: the audience knows more than the characters.
By putting the film in chronological order, Scott spoiled everything. Say goodbye to all the surprises and say goodbye to anything approaching subtlety. Say hello to dialogue that's repetitious and pointless.
This is especially true of the early part of the movie, where every line was meant to tease the viewer and slowly dole out information. Scott took that away.
All this to say that assembling a 'Tarantino' cut of True Romance has been a long held dream of mine.
Using the original screenplay as a guide, and re-inserting as much cut footage as possible, this new version of the film is probably the closest any of us will ever get to seeing Tarantino's vision.
With the scenes of the film back in their proper non-linear order, small throwaway lines are suddenly much more meaningful, and otherwise minor sequences suddenly become quite relevant.
The deleted scenes are also worth mentioning. Quite a bit was cut from the theatrical release. Dialogue that was deemed too nasty, or scenes that served as bridges in the original structure were all removed.
The saddest, most inexcusable victim of the Scott cut would have to be the character of Alabama. For reasons (at least to my knowledge) unknown, Scott left most of her best moments on the cutting room floor. Several scenes where she talks with Clarence, tells him stories about herself, or just plain explains where her head is at, were inexplicably omitted.
But that's the beauty of fan edits. In this new cut, everything is restored. The scenes all return to their proper place, and Alabama gets the screen time she always deserved.
Oh, and the ending is fixed, too. Gone is the happy happy 'Magic eye patch, frolicking on the beach, Elvis Junior' ending. We return instead to Tarantino's much nastier, much more satisfying finale.
Before I go, I'd like to mention that I did't like True Romance very much when I first saw it. Other than the Hopper/Walken scene, and Oldman's trippy performance, I thought it was fairly forgettable. Just a boy meets girl story.
Sure, the boy was psychotic and the girl was a hooker and they kill or are responsible for the deaths of nearly every person they meet, but that's besides the point. It just didn't do much for me. Of course, at the time, I didn't know that it had been so severely mangled. At the time, all I knew was that it didn't have that spark that made Tarantino's other work sing.
Well, now it hits the high notes. You're welcome.
I've been waiting fifteen years for someone at the studio to wise up and realize that there's money to be made from a 'Tarantino' cut of True Romance. Fact is, I'm pretty sure that if someone put the work in, this would surely merit a re-release in theaters. Hey, if a less good version of Donnie Darko can get one, 'The Tarantino cut' of True Romance should be a shoe-in.
Thanks for listening.

Have you done this yourself, or is it a studio release..?spoke.of (2008-10-18)
This is a fan edit, not a studio release. The big attempt here is to try to recreate the rhythm of the original script, and restore everything to its proper place. Sort of like what they did with Orson Welles' Touch of Evil about ten years back. Please send any and all comments to the email above.xmastv2007 (2008-10-18)

I was amazed at the quality of the editing and picture and sound. I sat there just waiting to see a flaw and found nothing to pick on. It was as if the movie had been recut by Tarantino himself. I have the Special edition True Romance package with the outtakes and extras scenes and I was very pleasantly surprised by the work. Even the titles and credits looked genuine. Kudos!!!AliLeigh (2009-01-03)
I thought the original was one of my favorite movies, but this is so much better. And the quality is excellent--nothing in the editing suggests that this is any less than a DVDRip of a re-release put out by Tarantino. Thank you so much--if they put this in theaters I'd gladly pay to see it on a big screen.Reservoir69 (2009-03-02)

A friend downloaded this and we watched it last night. I don't quite remember my first viewing of True Romance but I am positive this cut made the film a lot more memorable and interesting. Thank you for your efforts and the high quality of the finished workHawkPunk (2009-05-07)
Ever since I first saw this film in its original released version, I knew there was a Masterpiece in it somewhere. This effort proves that clearly. Thank you so much for your work. This was beyond Brilliant.~Hawk~

Just discovered this tonight, and I have to say that while this version is interesting, it was not better than the original, at least not to my mind. The insistence on using every scrap of "deleted scene" from the SE DVD added little. In fact it created unnecessary layers of confusion in a couple of instances (Walken in the lift scene, for instance - omitted originally for reasons of pace and continuity - now reinserted, it kills the pace and feels incredibly discontinuous). The only "reintegrated" scene that adds anything for me was and still is the origins of 'Bama's name. The rest are overlong, fluff or worse.
Undoubtedly, the original script was written in QT's quotidien non-linear style. It seems to me that Scott saw a slightly different emphasis in the story to the writer, a not uncommon situation with movies. The commentaries on the original SE discuss the changes both QT and RS suggested and implemented in the finished product.
As for the alternative ending, the charm of the original is in the supposition that true love conquers all. Hence the title. RS shot the QT ending to show him it didn't work. In my book it still doesn't. True Romance can't be stopped by a simple bullet, it always wins. Schmaltzy, sure. And maybe less "realistic". But it makes it a love story with guns, not a
psycho-and-his-whore-girlfriend-go-apeshit-with-guns-and-drugs
story with some nudity thrown in for good measure, a la Natural Born Killers. A happy ending is not necessarily a sell-out. Combined with losing the opening Alabama monologue (quoted 2 posts up), the essence of the original is destroyed. It's no longer Clarence and Alabama's story, its a cops and robbers story with them in it.The original is a great movie. This fan recut is, as I said, an interesting exercise. But its not even in the same league. Perhaps, as the OP suggested, a properly Hollywood-funded recut might work. But with amateur editing, its not going to float my boat that much.
Sorry for being such a downer, but I really felt it had to be said.

I agree with SlugClergy, Tarantino explains his vision on the commentary track anyway, plus he is overall very happy with Tony Scott's cut. Fanedits are a big 'fuck you' to the director and the writer. Tony Scott filmed Tarantino's end version just for shits n' giggles, but fanedits like this get to use it like its 'gold' and then use Tony Scotts direction to say he "spoiled everything" is a bold statement. Tony Scott did it his way and the movie ended up fantastic it has an 8.0 IMDB rating which is pretty bad ass overall. If you want Tarantino's 'envision', listen to his commentary track on the 2 disc DVD or read his original script, you can download it easily.

I like the non-linear story. It kept me intrigued and reading the Wiki summary (haven't seen the uncut version, figured I should start with what I thought was QT's vision) made the movie seem boring. I don't mind the cut scenes tossed in, nothing seemed to lose pace for me.But the ending blew. I don't demand happy endings, but the whole point of the story was thrown out.
Good work nonetheless.
