INFO ON CANNABIS AND CANCER: See what Dr.Melamede, researcher on cannabinoids, says about the medicinal properties of cannabinoids, both cannabinoids produced by the body and also in the cannabis plant http://www.thc-ministry.net/cannabisinfo.htm See a clip with Dr.Melamede on Youtube, where he talks about cannabis and cannabinoids: The SETH Group organization performed experiments regarding THC and brain cancer. Using the same tests used to judge new chemotherapies, the SETH team discovered that this herbal compound kills human brain tumor cells at a concentration that is nontoxic to normal brain cells. A computerized microscope captured images of the cells every 5 minutes to compile the time-lapse videos. After 20 hours of treatment, Î?9-THC kills all cancer cells but leaves normal brain cells alive. Cell death is evidenced by cells shrinking to inanimate white spheres. I must say I'm a bit provoced by your comment. Sure enough, if marijuana is legalized for medicinal purposes some people will take advantage of this, and make up reasons for procuring a prescription. But how is this any different from today's prescription pills? I would rather someone get off on cannabis than popping pills any day of the week.
You're quite right about the majority of people wanting to legalize cannabis do not suffer from cancer. I do not, however, see how this should impact cannabis for medicinal use in any way. Or does news like this make you happy?

See the movie, check out the links in the description, search for "Melamede" on Youtube (he's doing research on cannabinoids), and see what you think.
I find it amazing that some people always come up with half-assed reasons for keeping marijuana illegal, be it for recreational or medicinal use.

rubsadubs (2008-07-26)

You got me all wrong. First of all, I'm not for coffee shops at every corner. If cannabis is to be legalized for recreational use, it should be properly regulated, just like any other intoxicant should. I'm first and foremost interested in legalizing cannabis for medicinal purposes. Recreational use is a whole other discussion altogether.
Second of all, my motivation is not big stacks of green. I have no idea why you would think that. I know several people who are suffering from cancer, or have died from it, so this is a subject that's personal to me. I take offence to the fact that you think I'm doing this for the money. This is the real agenda, helping people. There is no hidden agenda, and all I want is that marijuana should be reconsidered as a medicine. The research that's availble suggests that there is great potential. This needs to be studied further, so that we can truly investigate the potential of cannabis for medicinal use, and not just the somewhat narrow minded research by the pharmaseutical companies today.
Instead of focusing on creating synthetic cannabinoids, and synthesizing THC and such, and rather research the cannabinoids altogether as they are in natural form. Do you think it's a coincidence that most patients prefer using the plant rather than similar drugs from medicine companies? Research shows that cannabinoids work best together. For more informatin on cannabinoids, check out Dr.Robert Melamede's research. The evidence so far warrants this, and there's no reason for holding back.
Regarding the "introducing new drugs to society", these drugs are already in place. It's not like we're going to introduce some newfound drug or anything. They're already out there now, totally unregulated! This is actually an argument for legalization, whether you like it or not. See what LEAP (Law Enforcers Against Prohibition say about the war on drugs and the politics of today:
http://www.leap.cc/cms/index.php?name=Content&pid=28

Regarding marijuana for medicinal purposes, you really should check out some of Lester Grinspoon's books on the subject, especially "Marihuana reconsidered" and "Marihuana: The Forbidden Medicine". They're available from Amazon.com.
I apologize for the "half-assed" comment, I was a wee bit upset, but like you yourself say, it's hard to start a serious discussion when you start off with unfounded accusations. Anyways, hope you enjoy the movie :-)

Jusrist you are out of line. There is no need to use thc-containing cannabis to cure. Normal hempseedoil (which does NOT make anyone high) is giving far better results than any medicin.
But coorporations can not make money on a plant, so they pay some presidents to boycot the plant! Thats whats happening d*mned.
Besides that, THC (which makes you high) is a very good alternative for analgesics. If you have a headache, you take a pill. Well, smoke some (non-addicting) pot next time and see.
You are generalizing, people in pain will not appreciate your comments. Wake up - collect your information, see for yourself, and stop judging about things you have not experienced yourself.

harigata (2010-05-30)

Jusrist, I take rubsadubs's apology back. Your reasoning IS half-assed; plus it is misspelled.
rubsadubs - I hear you, but I am tired of this constant need to research cannabis. Why don't somebody research my rights to do whatever I want with my body? Why don't they research the hundreds of chemical constituents of garlic and onion, because, you know, not all of them have been thoroughly research and tested on whole armies of lab rats.
Nobody researches alcohol. We all know it's bad for you, and it IS in broad recreational use.
What is so wrong with recreation, as a principle? Is pleasure a sin? I guess it is, if nobody big profits from it.
Not only patients with severe conditions should be able to enjoy the relaxing and balancing effects cannabis has on body and mind. It could improve the health of the general population.
Uch, I'm tired of preaching to the deaf.....

Thank you for the great video! And thanks also for the link to research this further ("Melamede" on Youtube). :-)
