Open a terminal...
tar -xvzf filename.tar.gz
cd vmware-distrib
then as "root"
./vmware-install.pl
or if you dont have root, like ubuntu
sudo ./vmware-install.pl

@techmester, you also have option thru Synaptic package manager in Ubuntu. It's in third party repos for Canonical. (system>admin>software sources) then search for VMware server in Synaptic
