"The Quiet Earth" (1985)

After taking a lethal overdose of sleeping pills a scientist wakes up in his hotel room to find he is apparently the last man on Earth. Some catastrophic effect from the project he's been working on kept him alive while wiping out the rest of humanity. Learning that only the people who died at the moment of the effect survived he and the other survivors have to keep it from happening again...
