Stanca di subire le angherie delle bande teppistiche dei gatti della città, la famiglia Mousekewitz, persuasi dall'astuto gatto Crudelio, dopo essere arrivati in America dalla lontana russia, decide di partire verso il far West, insieme ad altri amici topi. Crudelio descrive il lontano ovest come un paese della cuccagna, dove esistono persino strade lastricate di formaggio e dove i topi possono trovare ogni ben di Dio, pertanto Fievel Mousekewitz e sua sorella Tanya, insieme all'amico micione Tigre, non vedono l'ora di iniziare questo viaggio. Anche Crudelio è impaziente di ricevere i suoi ospiti, ma ha costruito una trappola al fine di catturare i topi per farsi dei gustosi topo-burger e costruire una grosso negozio per tutti i gatti della zona. FievelFievel per fortuna ha perso il treno ed è stato costretto insieme al gatto Tigre, ad attraversare il deserto a piedi, riuscendo a superare mille difficoltà, fra le quali quella degli indiani. Fievel viene casualmente a conoscenza del piano organizzato dal perfido Crudelio ed avvisa il vecchio e pigro sceriffo Wjlie Burp. Questi addestra il gatto Tigre come vice sceriffo, facendolo diventare in poco tempo, un arcigno cane da guardia. Fievel e Tigre potranno così sgominare la banda di gatti capeggiata dal losco Crudelio, così potranno trarre in salvo la famiglia Mousekewitz e Tigre conquistare il cuore della bella gatta Kitty.
