For .mkv files the VideoLan Player, aka VLC, or the K-Multimedia Player are good choices.
Although, to be fair, Media Player Classic and BSPlayer will work fine too if the proper codecs are installed.
Use Google to find these players, if you're interested.

gigivaluta (2008-01-02)

Mkv is a superior format to avi in almost every single ways, except it is not supported by standalone DVD players. This will probably change in a few years but because I only watch movies from my PC, I don't really care about that.
As I made the rip firstly for myself, I can assure you that a x264/mkv combo gives the best quality at a given bitrate on almost everything.

zeinabqureshi (2008-03-06)

I agree with *gigivaluta*. MKV is the best format for ripping DVDs. Nothing even comes close. There's the added advantage of muxing the subtitles with the rip.
If you really want to watch it on a player, better buy the DVD?

oldtex29 (2008-03-14)

Can someone explain to me how can I get the english subtitles to work? I'm using Windows Media Player Classic. I'm just getting the Romanian subs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, it appears that I am the only seeder of this file so I will upload for as long as I can.

gigivaluta (2008-03-16)

If you have Haali media splitter, you should be able to click on the system tray icon and select the language and/or subtitle language.
In media player classic you should be able to switch subtitle language by pressing the S key and audio with the A key. :)

gigibvaluta -
Thanks a ton. Not only for uploading this fantastic movie, but for monitoring the comments section and providing helpful advice. You rock.

I very nearly made the mistake of ripping Andrei Rublyov... luckily I decided to check tpb, and noticed this wonderful rip. MKV is the best format for ripping large films...or any sort of film. I'd commented on this earlier, and if you're interested in watching this on standalone, you can burn a DVD using ConvertXtoDVD, which works well with MKV files. Available on tpb.
Making an xvid of such a huge film would be a waste of time, especially as XVID doesn't compare well with Matroska.
Again, thanks for the upload.

so is this supported by cyberlink Power dvd?

sonicalchemy (2013-07-27)

Thank you gigivaluta for this!!!! I am waiting to see this version because I have the original DVD that I purchased here in brasil along with everything from Tarkovsky all original but purchased here, unfortunately I had no idea when sharing the rip of Andrei Rublev that another version existed, as you can probably notice, Tarkovsky is my favorite Director and Artist!!!! Everyone should see and try to understand the depth that he takes us to.
May God Bless you and all humanity because we are at a moment that is too hard on my heart to comment, the TV has been off for almost 7 years and these have been the best of times because I got fed up with the manipulation of spirit through the media :-)
Life is always beautiful and I love all like family which makes understanding others something very special because Christ blessed me with a Holy Compassion for all.
Thanx so very much!!!!
Much Love Peace Harmony Compassion and Great Health/Happiness to all as always,

ANDREI TARKOVSKY: "Nobody has ever cut anything from Andrei Rublov. Nobody except me. I made some cuts myself. In the first version the film was 3 hours 20 minutes long. In the second — 3 hours 15 minutes. I shortened the final version to 3 hours 6 minutes. I am convinced the latest version is the best, the most successful. And I only cut certain overly long scenes. The viewer doesn't even notice their absence. The cuts have in no way changed neither the subject matter nor what was for us important in the film. In other words, we removed overly long scenes which had no significance."
"We shortened certain scenes of brutality in order to induce psychological shock in viewers, as opposed to a mere unpleasant impression which would only destroy our intent. All my friends and colleagues who during long discussions were advising me to make those cuts turned out right in the end. It took me some time to understand it. At first I got the impression they were attempting to pressure my creative individuality. Later I understood that this final version of the film more than fulfils my requirements for it. And I do not regret at all that the film has been shortened to its present length"
