Hij komt er al gauw achter dat Kardinaal Richelieu, de adviseur van de koning, de Musketiers vogelvrij heeft verklaard. Nadat D'Artagnan zijn waarde heeft bewezen in het hanteren van het zwaard in afzonderlijke duels met de Musketiers Aramis, Athos en Porthos wordt hij door hen uitgenodigd het geheime document, met de opdracht de koning af te zetten, te onderscheppen.
