In Doc’s bende zitten de aan lager wal geraakte onverschrokken crimimeel Dix Handley, de café-eigenaar en gokker Gus Minissi, de professionele safekraker Louis Ciavelli en de bookmaker Cobbi, die als koerier fungeert tussen Emmerich en Doc. De overval is succesvol, maar een alerte nachtwaker schiet Ciavelli tijdens zijn vlucht neer. Een corrupte agent weet Cobbi te martelen en zo meer te weten te komen over de overvallers. Daarnaast kan Emmerich de boevenbende niet uitbetalen, omdat hij wordt gechanteerd door zijn voormalige zakenpartner Bob Brannom. English Doc Erwin Riedenschneider has just been released from prison and immediately seeks out financial backing for a heist which he has been plotting, the robbery of a jewellery store. He puts together a group of men consisting of Dix Handley, a tough guy, Gus, a bar owner and Louis Ciavelli, a family man. The robbery is a success and Dix and Doc take the jewels to their buyer, Alonzo 'Lon' Emmerich. Unfortunately, Emmerich does not have the money for them; he was hoping to be able to coerce the group into giving him the jewels under the false pretence of fencing them. He would then be able to sell them himself with the help of his business partner, Bob Brannom... One of the quintessential film noirs, this \"caper\" movie is consistently grungy and grimy, perfectly capturing the oppressive urbanity that is a hallmark of the film noir genre.nnMarilyn Monroe is here in one of her early performances, perfectly cast and acting in fine form.nnThe acknowledged master of film noir music, Miklos Rosza, contributes the score.nnThe weakest part of movie is the bit from John McIntire near the end, in which he gives a speech extolling the virtue and necessity of law enforcement. This may have been added to conform to the film code of the period.nnThis is my favorite film noir.
